Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment & Training Programme

Pelvic Floor Muscles need stamina and reactivity to support the internal organs (bladder, uterus, bowel) and control continence.

  • A “weak” bladder usually occurs when the muscles in the pelvic floor or sphincter have been damaged or weakened such as during pregnancy or childbirth.

If after your 6 weeks postnatal appointment it does not feel right down below (heaviness) or if you experience any degree of incontinence it is important that you talk to your GP or alternatively you can make an appointment with me to discuss your symptoms and be assessed. I will let you know if you will benefit from the following training programme.

The Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise Programme is a series of individual sessions (around 10) to teach specific exercises and assess muscular strength.

It includes a Pelvic Floor Assessment appointment (history taking, physical examination, problem identification, explanation of the functioning of the pelvic floor muscles, detailed explanation of the method used and urine testing if relevant). After this appointment you will have all the information you need to decide if you want to book for the programme.

During the following appointments I will teach you specific exercises and control their effectiveness. This usually requires gentle digital vaginal examination. Over the course of the sessions, additional exercises will be taught and assessed in order for you to develop awareness and control of your pelvic floor muscles as well as strengthening them.

All the exercises can usually be learnt over 8 sessions with a frequency of 2 sessions per week but the number and frequency of appointments can be tailored to your needs and availability.

The final appointment is programmed when you can do the exercises independently (autonomously). It is however essential to continue exercising daily for a period of time and a follow-up appointment can be booked 3 to 6 months later if necessary.

Price: £20.00 for the first appointment then £15.00 / session (1/2 hr) in a private room at the Royston Complementary Health Centre, Royston, SG8 9JS
